What the...?
Bad Coverage
You seen that commercial for Sony's latest MP3 player? No? You probably have, you just can't remember that it was about an MP3 player. Hopefully you were too busy gagging over Macy Gray's rendition of "walk this way". All I know is that when I saw it, I knew I had to post a blog. I can't be the only one who's noticed the trend of popular artists who try to cover beloved, classic songs, only to butcher and demolish them in the process.
Some aren't quite so bad. Limp Bizkit covered the Who's "Behind Blue Eyes". Yeah, it sucked, but they didn't butcher the song. Honestly, they kept it pretty true to the original, simply substituting Roger Daltry's voice for that of Fred Durst. That last sentence pretty much sums up why Limp Bizkit's cover sucked ass. At least they tried.
Sheryl Crowe covered Guns and Roses' "Sweet Child O' Mine". She managed to turn one of the most loved songs in rock history into a completely bland, talentless string of pathetic alternative folk -- aka, every Sheryl Crowe Song.
It's those who step truly outside their boundries that really upset me. The fact the Macy Gray tried to cover "Walk this way" was bad enough... I can still taste the intestinal acid that I had to swallow for a 2nd time after hearing it... but anyone who's heard Britney Spears' attempt at the Stones' "Satisfaction" will realize the Macy Gray, as bad as she is, doesn't possess the pure suck that describes the no-talent ass-clown that is Spears. Who the hell does she think she is, recording and actually selling "Satisfaction" as a dance-style remix song with her heavy, out of tune voice belting out the chorus?
It's all a result of the music industry today. It's an industry where dollars matter more than half-decent songs, and a big pair of can get you farther than a virtuose understanding of an instrument. It wouldn't bother me so much... they just need to stop trying to act as if they actually have the right to mess with those few great songs that just shouldn't be covered... Those songs that made us bang our heads to the point of whiplash on the way to summer camp. Honestly, what's next? Good Charlotte doing Layla? Nelly's version of "Stairway to Heaven?"
Whatever.... it's late.... and time to sign off. This post really isn't as controversial as I hoped... come to think of it, I can't think of anybody who would disagree. BUT... if you do, let me know what an ass-bag I am, so I can have more T-bucks.
Im Back
Well, I finally got my account working again, so maybe I can start posting once in a while. For the longest time I couldn't get into my blog, some password error or something.
But anyway, I finally finished with my 5 and 1/2 years of college, bought a $70 MCAT prep book, and moved into a decent house. So now my battle is to defeat the temptation to sleep in to noon, get up, watch TV, and drink beer all day, and to get up early, run, lift, and study my ass off. Here's hoping I can muster up the motivation.
Anyhow, I'll post something worth arguing about in a little bit, I have plenty of things to talk about, but I need to make some coffee first.
